Entries from the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census of Households for Angus, Scotland, where there is at least one person surnamed STIRLING present.

  1891 and 1901 Census !

From this page you can get TEXT FILES which will allow you to see a list of 80 or so, premises where at least one person surnamed STIRLING was recorded on the 1881, 1891, or 1901 Census for Angus (the county known at the time as Forfarshire), in Scotland. (The other persons listed for the addresses are usually also included - they may be related).  For 1891 & 1901 there are SKirling for ALL Scotland.

You are advised to read the following notes about the file as to how you may get benefit from the data.

The files are in the simplest, 'TEXT & TABS' format which allows you to view the data in nearly any appropriate software application.  The data is in the following columns (see below) -

(These column headings may be too wide for your spreadsheet display - can you format them as VERTICAL TEXT, or WRAP the cell content.)

A typical example of the text file for one house is shown - you may need to scroll right (how it can appear - see table below) -

(Ignore the  " " marks - although these are sometimes required.)

'TEXT & TAB' files are best OPENED in a spreadsheet or database software application, but even a simple word processor can allow you to view, but use a fixed pitch font such as COURIER NEW

The columns, or fields, are in the headings shown above.  Using a spreadsheet or database, it is expected that you are likely to sort and analyse the data in several ways in order to carry out your research.

  1. SERIES number is there to allow you to return to the original order of the entries in the file.  If you change the data to YOUR chosen sorted order on a permanent basis you may wish to apply a new SERIES number.
  2. PROPERTY# is to allow the groupings of all the persons recorded at one property, and includes an 'empty' header. There is no significance in the number.
  3. The third column contains the individual property address, followed by the village, town, etc.  As ALL the records are for addresses in ANGUS, SCOTLAND this has been left out.  (The County of Angus was referred to in the original 1881 Census documents as FORFAR (or Forfarshire) and has known to confuse researchers.)
  4. Data removed.
  5. NAMES included for the address. (You can easily SEARCH for a name on the page, or sort the NAME records.)
  6. MARRIED status.
  7. AGE as declared - may be inaccurate.
  8. Approximate year of birth (shown above and below as 9999).
  9. GENDER
  10. BIRTHPLACE as declared - may be inaccurate. Forfarshire altered to Angus.
  11. RELATIONSHIP to the HEAD of the residence (and any handicap).
  12. OCCUPATION including scholars

The following table shows how the data could look in a spreadsheet , but with the column numbers as above. Scroll right  >>>>

There are 80+ residences, including some known to be communal.

SORTING.

It is likely that the files will download straight into your Internet browser and you will immediately see the text file.  You should go to EDIT, SELECT ALL, and SAVE as a TXT file to your filing system (or desktop) where you can recover it later.  If you use a spreadsheet or database application you should, later, OPEN the file with that application.  You are likely to be 'asked' a few formatting questions for the file, but not always.  Save the file in its NEW FORMAT to the appropriate place in your filing system (My Documents, or a subfolder, in Windows).  After you have converted the file to your chosen format the original TEXT file is likely to be of no further use.

Please send some feedback regarding these file -

July 2002 - Now 1891 & 1901 Census too !

There is a considerable amount of STIRLING information available on this website.  Use our SEARCH ENGINE to find most, but you would require to download the various STIRLING DATA files to get full advantage of the information held - if in doubt PLEASE ASK!  Visit often - there's always something new!
