Notes about the Muster Rolls of Angus, Scotland
for the South African War 1899 - 1900

The following notes offer an explanation that this is not the only source for Boer War service names, there are more out there, I just haven't seen them, so it is a start for someone new at this.  Perhaps someone else can turn up more Angus lists. 

There are about 1200 entries, I have alpha sorted them.  Please do not depend on any of the spelling as the originals may vary.

As at 7th August 2005 the Webmaster is aware that a copy of this book is currently available for sale from the following bookseller www.bennygillies.co.uk and may likely available from other booksellers who are members of the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association.

In 1988 I came across a film at the local LDS Family History Centre that contained the above book. While looking for any entries that might be in my family genealogy - I thought this might be a useful list to copy out.  The resulting information is my transcription from the printed book.  As always, whenever you come across a "transcription" please check the original source.  There is always a possibility of error and omission of detail.  Every care was taken to make a faithful transcription but there is always room for error.

Once I had completed the transcription I felt there must be more muster lists as the people I was looking for, Charles Leonard and James Bush, did not appear in this book.  To-date I have not found any further printed lists of this nature.  If you know of any, please email the details to the me - see my index page.

I have given both the Public Library system call number and the LDS Family History Centre film number for ease of obtaining the original on loan from either facility.

Hello, Thank you for your e-mail. Driver 76745 James Hagan, 38th Battery Royal Field Artillery killed in action 20-09-1901 at Quaggafontein. Quaggafontein is a farm in the Orange Free State 23km south-east of Zastron. A camp here was overrun by a commando led by Chief-Commandant PH Kritzinger. Fourty-eight British soldiers were killed, mostly of Lovett's Scouts. The 38th Battery lost 7 killed and 5 wounded. You may be able to get a photograph of his grave by writing to jean.beater @ nationalmonuments.co.za He (your ancestor) is listed on the Royal Artillery Memorial in Hyde Park, London. I can supply you two photographs of this memorial; a general shot of the whole memorial and photo showing his name. Each print costs £2.00 plus postage, airmail to the USA is approximately £1.50.
